Springfield’s Stainless Steel Industry is Booming
Stainless steel production in Springfield is off the charts! It all started in 1940 with the founding of Paul Mueller Company, a stainless steel manufacturer, and has grown to be a huge local industry which employs hundreds in the area.

Springfield has luster, and it’s not from our outdoor gems. Springfield is home to a hotbed of stainless steel production. Our manufacturing industry employs 23,000, and one out of every five of those jobs is in stainless steel, according to data from the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce. “Paul Mueller is the one that started it all in stainless steel,” says Danny Perches, project manager of economic development for the chamber. The sheet metal company founded in 1940 has spurred the creation of dozens of metalworking businesses locally. To understand the scope of the economic impact of the industry, we’ve rounded up six of the area’s top stainless steel employers to see how many jobs they provide.
